2015 Wrap

I'm doing this a day early as I'm definitely too tired to hit it again (recovery definitely became an issue this week) and tomorrow is my work's inventory, which is moved up into ungodly hours to start, so I don't have enough time to get in the workout and shower and get to sleep at a reasonable time as it is. Instead, I'm just going to take the break and shoot for a full week next week.

One of the neat things about doing this blog since the format switch in October is I can just glance at a month to see how many workouts it had. While this is (obviously) not a workout post, it is useful in the context of providing a compilation of this blog, though this is (to me) somewhat woeful. I don’t look at this as something being better than nothing, though in this case, it is probably true, but rather in what was measured vs. what the potential was. Definitely came up wanting overall...

Total Posts in 2015 (including this): 21
Actual workouts: 17
Highest total, month: Tie: December, October (8)
Most frequently used equipment: Schwinn Air Dyne
Miles logged: ~103.85
Minutes logged: ~497 (8 hours, 17 minutes)
Weight start: 250
Weight end of year: 245
Net gain/loss: -5
Total goals reached: 2

17 workouts is something I wouldn't really be satisfied with if it was over 1 month (though it would be more reasonable at my current level of conditioning), let alone over 3 as it was here. The 8 workouts in a month is nothing I can put any kind of positive stamp on, truthfully. I do, however, feel like I finished strong and established what I set out to do, which was find the current level of Cardio fitness. The weight loss was nice, but the main focus is improving Cardio, though I won't be returning to that until after I get back from my next business trip. Once I get to what I consider at least a close approximation of Cardio fitness, I'm definitely looking at getting back to the gym, barring having to move and/or more Shoulder issues...assuming neither of those is in play, that's looking more like February or March at the latest...

Before I leave for the next business trip, at the start of the new year, I'll be back with a Goal Post.

D19: 12.29.15

Workout: Cardio
Equipment Used: Schwinn AirDyne
Duration: ~7 miles/~30 minutes
Driver: Alice Cooper: Da Da
Calories: unknown

Quality Level: N/A Struggled a bit due to a minor headache (HELL-O, winter pollution!) and it took quite a while for Legs to get warmed up, but I was able to work in some HIIT a bit, running from a baseline of between 44 and 47 PRPM to 57 - 61, which is a much higher jump than it sounds. I was not able to sustain it particularly long, though, but much of that was due to not being inspired musically (I like to time it to the song tempo a lot). Air was pretty solid throughout. Workout was probably slightly beyond 30 minutes, with the cool-down, but not tremendously.

Observations/Intel: Still not sweating a ton during the workouts, despite wearing a sweatshirt. I don't think Legs are up to the pounding quite yet. One of the things I like best about the Air Dyne is increasing resistance with increasing speed and when I dug in a bit tonight, I got some definite barking. Air didn't seem especially challenged, though. I also felt a bit tired going into it, so I'm guessing recovery isn't quite keeping up with the demands quite yet, either.

Still need to try to get a weigh-in somewhere...

D18: 12.28.15

Workout: Cardio
Equipment Used: Schwinn AirDyne
Duration: ~10.25 miles/~45 minutes
Driver: Cherlene Soundtrack
Calories: unknown

Quality Level: N/A This one was bordering on okayish. Legs started to bark a bit after that much time, but everything else was good, including Air and saddle. I chose poorly when I had dinner tonight and choosing an album that, while good, is also very laid back didn't help anything either.

Observations/Intel: I'm going to try to work in some HIIT tomorrow a bit. Still need to get another weigh-in somewhere in there. Tonight also marks me hitting the 2nd primary goal I had for this year and reaching the 3rd again. I will not be reaching the 1st of those this year, however, as the 5th possible day is New Year's Eve and there is zero point in even pretending I will be working out that night. I will do a year end cumulative post then, though, as well as a follow-up Goal Post for 2016 January 1st.

I also need to remember to do at least 1 more weigh-in between now and then, though...

D17: 12.27.15

I did manage to remember to do a weigh-in...don't recall the day it was, though. That one was 245.

Workout: Cardio
Equipment Used: Schwinn AirDyne
Duration: ~5.5 miles/~30 minutes
Driver: Violent Femmes: Happy New Year, Grip Inc.: Hostage To Heaven
Calories: unknown

Quality Level: N/A I took a bit of a minor spill this weekend on some ice and banged up my left arm, left ass cheek and slightly sprained my thumb on my left hand, so I decided to ease into it tonight. This one was very, very casual and the approximately 30 minutes is very loose. It was somewhat less than that, but I'm probably not going to take any of these down to precise minutes at this point.

Observations/Intel: I mostly wanted to see how I would respond after the spill as well as test out the MP3 player I got for Christmas. Sound is as crappy as I anticipated, but MP3 players, of course, don't degrade anymore than they already are and don't skip. I do have some additional phones on the way, which may improve things slightly and another CD player, having finally given up on this Philips piece of shit I'm fighting now. I also have found a bunch of cycling landscape videos on Amazon Prime, which should prove helpful in the coming days, weeks and months ahead...

D16: 12.23.15

Workout: Cardio
Equipment Used: Schwinn AirDyne
Duration: ~6.5 miles/~30 minutes
Driver: Savatage: Hall Of The Mountain King
Calories: unknown

Quality Level: N/A A bit tired the last couple of days, but even with what I felt was a more casual pace, still not horrible mileage and pacing. Obviously, this wasn't super-taxing on air or Legs, except on the heinie. That will still take some time to get more accustomed, I imagine.

Observations/Intel: Finding balance between this and everything else continues to be a struggle. Not sure it will ever get easier, but adding in the holidays obviously doesn't help things. The only way to do it is to do it, so despite setbacks, I will continue to press on...

Keep forgetting the weigh-in...hopefully I am able to do that by the time the next workout comes around, which, at this point, is probably Sunday (12/27) night...

D15: 12.21.15

Workout: Cardio
Equipment Used: Schwinn AirDyne
Duration: ~7.5 miles/~30 minutes
Driver: Therapy?: Troublegum
Calories: unknown

Quality Level: N/A Getting more and more dialed in...still need to get the "saddle seat" up to normal, but that normally takes a bit. I still have the Air Dyne set to parallel my Trek bike, so I guess if I can ever get back into doing that, I'll be in good shape there...depending on if I get to the gym and start doing other forms of cardio more I guess. That aside, Legs were a bit stiff up front but quickly rebounded. Air was pretty decent throughout.

Observations/Intel: The real litmus/stress test will come when I start incorporating HIIT into things, hopefully next week. That should be really interesting to see how it shakes out. I'm not expecting anything great, but I'm not as far deep as I thought I would be, so I guess I could be surprised. This week is more to get my bottom into condition and to try to hit one of the goals I had for this year.

Speaking of which, they are:

Work out all available days during a week (Sun night - Thurs night)
45 minutes in a session
10 miles in a workout

I have hit exactly one of those and that was walking on a treadmill on a business trip. Running out of real estate here, but I have hope that I will hit at least one of the two remaining this week and possibly hit that middle one at least once more before the end of the year.

Also, I really need to try to get another weigh-in at some point...

D14: 12.20.15

Workout: Cardio
Equipment Used: Schwinn AirDyne
Duration: ~7 miles/~30 minutes
Driver: Metal Church: The Dark
Calories: unknown

Quality Level: N/A Tonight, despite a lot of stop/start stuff that's going to need to go away, I was able to keep Pedal RPM hovering near 50 for most of the night. Given that I started the workout kind of tired, I'm pretty pleased with that. Legs held up decently for the most part and Air was solid overall, though that could have been better. It mostly just took a lot of time to get adjusted and the support clothes I thought I had evidently went in a bag to charity, so I'm re-buying those, I guess.

Observations/Intel: Right Arm/Shoulder continues to be of issue, in this case, it felt like it was wearing out considerably, which is more annoying than anything. Given that it's not getting a ton of work, there is no cause I can isolate, so that MRI is looking more and more likely. Yay.

D13: 12.17.15

Weigh-in this morning was a pleasing 246. I wanted it obviously much lower by this time, but given the long layoff and still adjusting to getting back into the swing of things, the net is -1 lb., which I'm taking as a positive on the diet side, though I obviously have a ways to go to clean it up more...as it is, I think I'm striking at least a better balance than before.

Workout: Cardio
Equipment Used: Schwinn AirDyne
Duration: ~6.5 miles/~30 minutes
Driver: Living Colour: Stain
Calories: unknown

Quality Level: N/A As expected, it's getting much easier, even after that layoff. I felt like I could have probably gone a lot longer tonight, but the layoff has definitely reset my ass somewhat, so I need that to get adjusted more to the seat. Legs were ok and air was fine throughout...I need to get myself more into the "mode" of working out. I don't know that I will ever regain the same mindset or that it would be appropriate at this stage of life, but for now, if I remember to put on workout clothes after I get home, that helps to get my mind at least in the right direction.

Observations/Intel: Going forward, I think I'll hopefully be able to get back to some momentum, barring any more stupid illnesses to derail things. I'm still not quite sure about hitting the gym again. My guess there is more like February. There may be a domicile move in the near future and I don't want to get into a new project until that one is concluded, so it could be even past February...

D12: 12.13.15

Reading back, I see I was lamenting the lack of updates and now notice that it’s now about 40 days or so later…ugh. A bit of stuff happened between here and there….

First day of the convention (first week of November) show saw me walking around for about 6+ straight hours…not solidly walking the entire time, of course, but standing the entire time…I meant to put on one of those step app things on my phone, but forgot…it was definitely a lot, though…legs held up pretty well, except when I stupidly tried to go up one of the gigantic flight of stairs…then they rather enthusiastically expressed their displeasure and I had to gut it out…cardio wasn’t really up to the task and I was pretty winded temporarily by that…still have a ways to go, but it’s important to note that was after the cardio at the hotel the day before and about 4 hours of on and off walking of the show…no headaches.

Next way was a little more walking and some white-knuckled driving, but it was enough to scrub the workout I was half-heartedly debating.

Weigh-in the day after I returned was 249. The day after was 247. No idea what it is now. If I remember, I'll check it tomorrow.

Didn’t manage to get back to the Air Dyne because I felt a lot like I was fighting off the cold my son had/has and I don’t like working out under those circumstances…it may have been that I didn’t recover from the trip as well…a couple of days later and it was pretty clear that I was suffering from the same symptoms of my son’s cold, which started to more manifest itself the day I left for another weeklong work trip (2nd week of November). It never fully developed, but I definitely had neither the energy nor interest to chance it as it was basically a super-travel week to wrap up 2015 while I had the chance…from this point on, I’m flying to the territory until the weather clears up reasonably enough.

The first available night after I got back was Sunday night, but I scrubbed that too, as I was still feeling a bit tired. I hated to do it, but it will obviously do me no good to get sick at this point. The following night was a work function, but after I returned from the trip, I was back to 246, which was a bit unexpected, but still nice to see. I wound up scrubbing the entire week, actually and the following week as well, as I was trying to play catch-up with a bunch of stuff I’d put off due to all those work trips. As that week ran into the holiday, it’s almost as it is a more or less restart back to the beginning, especially since the week after, I finally did wind up succumbing to that stupid cold/cough thing, right at the front of another week long work trip…once I got back, I decided to try to rest up so I could resume at capacity, but it seems a lot like we’re going to have to relocate residences in the somewhat near future, so that time off also wound up being somewhat extended…that and the stupid cold is not 100% gone, but not enough to infringe on my patience…all in all, a much more sustained than expected layoff.

Anyway, as to tonight…

Workout: Cardio
Equipment Used: Schwinn AirDyne
Duration: ~7 miles/~30 minutes
Driver: Stuck Mojo: Pigwalk
Calories: unknown

Quality Level: N/A This was a return to things, but I don't feel my cardio dropped off much, so I tried to push a bit harder tonight...legs weren't really up to a whole lot of that, but after them seemingly taking forever to get warmed up, it was able to flow a lot better. The issue I was having with numbness is gone so far after that last adjustment, but I found another issue with a lack of support from my boxers that caused me to have to tweak things to get the workout in. It was an on-the-fly adjustment I probably won't keep and definitely will be switching drawers for the next few workouts and hope that it doesn't cause issues with my hernia surgery scar. CD player is also still not doing too well, so still considering a replacement there...

Observations/Intel:  I did wind up going in to the doctor for my shoulder, which was not rotator-related but more having to do with the AC joint. X-rays suggested to him that it may be arthritis. He felt a steroid shot would help, which did for about a day, but it’s still not quite in order. I’m letting it go for now, but with the recent drop in temperatures and the corresponding achiness, I suspect he’s right about the arthritis thing. At some point, I’ll probably schedule an MRI. He did mention atrophy, which I sort of expected after that kind of a layoff and not really restricted to that area, but any surgery would necessarily have to wait until January sometime, due to already scheduled trips and maybe later still, if I wind up having to move, which is also why I haven’t scouted out gyms just yet…why torture myself, I guess. Given how off-track I currently am, trying to be in a position to hit the gym in January is pretty much out of the question anyway…
